Approx. 73 leaves, handwritten in ink on both sides. 12¼x8, original sailcloth over boards, recased with new endpapers, new spine label.
Detailed and lengthy ship's journal kept on a whaling cruise, notable for accounts of whale chases marked by pictures of whales drawn in the margins. With pencil scrawl on the front cover noting it as the "Log kept by William F(?) Brown Ship Reaper of Nantucket." The first page is headed "Remarks on boards of Ship Reaper," and each page contains about five days' worth of entries, in narrative form. Though the entries customarily begin with the weather and sailing conditions, there is detail of the rigging used, coast lines sighted, etc. Most interesting, however, are the accounts of whales seen, and whales caught. In the margins of entries relaying the former instance, tails of whales are drawn; in the case of the latter happenstance, the entire whale is drawn, or two, even three, depending on the success of the chase. Information from the National Archives and Records Service describes ship as "having 2 decks, 3 masts, a square stern, a bust head, and no galleries, as being 101 feet 6 inches long, 338 30/95 tons. It was built at Middletown, Connecticut, in 1819."
Condition:
Covers soiled with ink blots and other wear; ink was spilled on the second leaf, which caused blotting, and tears; a few pages with bottom entries clipped off, some soiling and corner wear, still very good.
