Seutter's noteworthy atlas of the world, with many large, finely-engraved hand-colored maps, nearly all with ornate pictorial cartouches, which are not colored. An index follows each map, identifying numerous locales, printed on the facing pages of two leaves. In this copy, a hand lettered ornate color title-leaf follows the engraved title, beginning "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum LII Tabulae," dated Augustae 1731-1745; following this, on the back of the world map, is an armorial shield. The maps include Seutter's famed map of the world in two hemispheres, with eight smaller hemisphere's surrouding the globes, with five depictions of California as an island in all; maps of the various continents, including North and South America with California an island (McLaughlin 211); the various European countries in great detail; the different regions of Germany in even greater detail; etc. Notably, the map of Genoa has a bird's-eye view of the city at the lower third. The maps have been tagged for easy identification; in some cases these tags have come off. Phillips Atlases 593.
