Designed by George Macy. With 26 illustrations by Henri Matisse comprising 6 soft-ground etchings and reproductions for the sketches of each on blue and yellow paper. 11½x9, pictorial gilt cloth; board slipcase. No. 953 of 1500 copies, signed by Henri Matisse.

"One of the very few American livres de peintres issued before World War II. According to George Macy, who undertook this only American publication of Matisse's illustrations, he asked the artist how many etchings the latter could provide for five thousand dollars. The artist chose to take six subjects from Homer's Odyssey. The preparatory drawings are reproduced with the soft-ground etchings (Matisse's only use of this medium)" (The Artist and the Book 197).
