Superb collection of plates from McKenney and Hall's famous work, first publised in folio from 1836-1844. Howes says that "these are the most colorful portraits of Indians ever executed...The original oil paintings of which the plates were copied were all destroyed in the 1865 Smithsonian fire." The paintings were the work of artist Charles Bird King, who was employed by the War Department to paint the Indian delegates visiting Washington D.C. Although the title-page calls for 100 plates, the contents lists only 99, as here. For this edition some of the original lithographic stones were replaced by chromolithographs, but most of the plates are hand-colored. Bookplates of George Spratt. See Howes M129.
