This early American accounting and bookkeeping manual contains what some believe to be the first appearance in print of the dollar sign ($). The book consists of a series of practical lessons for clerks. The dollar sign, which herein looks like a typographical improvisation, appears on p. 56 and in sample ledgers throughout the book, as well as in the appendix. The handsome engraving shows the American Eagle, Spanish Pistole, French Guinea, British Guinea, and two other coins. "First book to adopt the dollar sign" - Howes. Howes L196; Evans 32366.
