The rarest of at least 5 variant editions, without priority. Where all variants generally agree is that the Negotiator departed the United States early in September, was in the Cape of Good Hope by late October, and on Nov. 26 she struck an iceberg in the North Pacific. Though each crew member made it to the lifeboats with adequate supplies, only thirteen survived longer than nine days due to the harsh cold. Soon their number dwindled to three. Forced to consider cannibalism, these three drew lots, and the loser provided sufficient food for the other two to live another twelve days. They somehow managed to survive until early March, when they discovered a small island. When they were within a hundred yards, their boat overturned, and Foss' companion drowned. With only rainfall and seals to sustain him, he lasted five years, after which he was serendipitously rescued by the U.S.S. Neptune and brought back to the United States. This edition is one of at least four other 1816 Boston editions claiming that Foss hailed from Elkton, Maryland, and that the Negotiator was based in Philadelphia and giving the date of the voyage as 1809. This edition, with the Brewster imprint and the Philadelphia point of departure, appears to be the scarcest. OCLC locates only two copies. Sabin 25189; Shaw & Showmaker 37628.
