Contemporary photographic reproduction of two drawings of the "Rebel Steam Ram Atlanta". Top view shows the vessel at sea and the lower view is a birds-eye view of the deck. Approximately 6¼x10¼" on large stiff mount. Titled in ink in lower margin.

Caption reads: "Rebel Steam Ram 'Atlanta'. Captured June 17th 1863. On Exhibition in front of Washington St. for the benefit of the Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon. Philad. Nov. 1st 1863." The first Atlanta was a casemate southern ironclad, converted from a Scottish-built blockade runner serving in the Confederate Navy. She was captured in battle on the James River, Virginia and then served in the Union Navy for the duration of the Civil War. Before she was repaired in the Federal navy yard and commissioned again in 1864, she was displayed in Philadelphia for the benefit of the Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon, an organization which cared for thousands of Union soldiers as they passed through Philadelphia. The admission fees gathered from those viewing the boat were applied to the saloon and helped with the upkeep and growth of the hospital and other facilities.
