"In 1834, the Philadelphia Medical Society, of which Chase was an honorary member, formed a committee to investigate the use of trusses. Based on these efforts two short preliminary papers were published, and this volume was the committee's final report. The work contains a table discussing over 200 cases of hernias. Much of the text is devoted to a detailed description of Chase's truss (deemed by the committee to be the most efficient), and its mode of operation. There are 23 figures in the text."--Rutkow GS14.
