W. D. Alexander, an eminent Hawaiian scholar, well summarizes this notable work: "[The] narrative is a valuable contribution to the history . . . of the Hawaiian Islands. In particular, it throws much light on the proceedings of the Russians here in 1815-1817, on the mutiny and piracy of the crew of the Argentine cruiser, Santa Rosa, her recapture by Capt. Bouchard of the frigate Argentina, and their homeward voyage, including the sack and burning of Monterey, California." Cowan, p. 143 ("many unusual details"); Forbes, Hawaiian Bib., 4726 ("An important work."); Graff 879 ("quite interesting"); Howes C779.
