Sermons preached at Coloma to raise money to pay a church debt, presenting an interesting glimpse at religion and morals during the California Gold Rush, with such comments as "It is deeply humiliating to be compelled to state that this sin has entirely overrun the State; and so completely has it taken possession of the people, that one hardly knows whether to give the palm to Gambling or to Swearing. Wherever a person goes it is all one - the stage or the steamer, the hotel or the street, the kitchen, the parlor or dinner table, the shop or the saloon - every place of amusement - all, all resound with blasphemy - and that, too, of the most horrid kind..."
