At the moment when his launch touches the shore at Tanna, the Rev. John Williams stands at the bow, his hand outstretched, hat in hand. Behind him sit other missionaries and sailors, offering colored trinkets to the natives. Rev. John Williams was an ill-fated missionary from the London Missionary Society, who traveled to Tanna (Rarotonga, New Hebrides) on board the ship Camden. Baxter published a pair of companion prints memorializing his friend when he heard of his demise. George Baxter is credited with inventing the first commercially viable method of printing in color, a combined intaglio and relief process using oil colors rather than ink. Despite his technical excellence and the general popularity of his prints, Baxter’s business was never profitable – his process was laborious and it seems likely that his perfectionism prevented him from completing many of his commissioned works on time.
