With original mailing envelope of the Independent Line for California, Office of Atlantic Steamer and...Pacific Steamer", New York. To his brother James Post, Deckertown, New York: "I am thus far on my way towards San Francisco and never was in better health in my life. We have had no Sea and the weather has been delightful. We should be in Aspinwall tonight and in the morning take the cars and tomorrow evening be in Panama. You can fancy me on a mule my pants mud up to my knees, and occasionally a refreshing shower, the rain running down my legs until my boot legs get full and running over at the tops...." Post reached San Francisco and became a well known citizen and pioneer merchant - and the City jail-keeper - but, in 1860, after psychiatric examination, a Judge pronounced him insane and sent him, in a strait jacket, to the State Asylum at Stockton. For some reason, he was returned to the City Hospital in San Francisco, where on July 2, 1860 he committed suicide by cutting his throat in a fit of insanity.
