Leaf Xx2, containing 1st Kings Chapter 21 and portions of Chapter 20 and 22. 19x14.5 cm. (7½x5¾"), set in recessed compartment in custom-made marbled boards folder with leather label (misspelling publisher's name "Maramduke").

Original leaf from the first complete bible in any language to be printed in North America. John Eliot, an English Puritan clergyman and pastor in Roxbury, Massachusetts, translated the Bible into the Natick dialect of the region’s Algonquin tribes to aid in the propagation of the scriptures. One thousand copies were to be printed by Samuel Green and a young English press assistant, Marmaduke Johnson, an order so large that it required a special shipment of paper from England. Despite the relatively large number printed, they are quite rare today.
