366 pp. Steel-engraved frontispiece portrait of Fremont, plus wood-engraved plates. (8vo), original cloth, gilt spine. First Edition.

Wagner-Camp 282:1, without ads called for but also without the appendix that was included in all later printings. Tipped in at front is a portion of an autograph letter, signed, (the first line trimmed from the foot of another sheet), from Fremont to an unknown recipient. In full: "The situation in our Country is unquestionably critical. It demands the devotion and the patriotism of all men who really love their country, and it is one of those moments when all personal aspirations should vanish in the face of the great questions of principle and national existence which are at stake. Thanking you gentlemen for the evidence which your letter gives and of your confidence in my disposition to do anything in my power for the interests of the Country. I am, very truly yours, J.C. Fremont."
