Leverich sells a Negro man named Jack, for $200, to Hyatt, for a term of seven years, after which, Hyatt agreed to “manumit and release” (emancipate) Jack.

An early New York slavery document, from one relation of a  prominent merchant  family which had branches in both North and South. The latter included  New Orleans cotton factors who represented Southern planters shipping goods to New England and Europe, and one fabulously wealthy Mississippi plantation owner with thousands of slaves. The more modest New York Leverich who signed this document provided for Jack’s future freedom just as the New York Legislature passed a law that would free all slaves in the state born before 1799 – but not until the year 1827, two years later than after the emancipation deadline provided in this paper.
