To her brother, attorney L.H. Copeland (probably at Syracuse, NY): “…Your friend Billy Williams has been here…he expects to return to the Gold Region this spring. It is my opinion that California will be so flooded with emigrants this spring that it will be a hard matter for them to get Gold enough to get back with. They are going from all directions…Charles Mulford…started yesterday morning for the Gold Region, leaving some half dozen others to follow…” This was the second trip west Charles Mulford; in 1849, he had barely survived the overland journey in company with his best friend, fellow New York lawyer Niles Searls, (whose diary of the grueling trip was published in 1940). After trying their luck in the mines, both men practiced law in Nevada City, Searls going on to become Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court.
