In the first, Carpenter states that he "resides on a preemptive claim in said county of Alameda at the base of the mountain in the rear of San Antonio, and that during his residence on said claim no less than three wagon roads have been opened... to suit the convenience of different parties travelling to and from said Red Woods in consequence of which your petitioners fence has been thrown down his crop damages and other property destroyed. Your petitioner is now informed that an order has been issued for the survey of an additional road from the neighborhood of Vicente Peralta to the said Red Woods..." The following year Peralta has a similar complaint, adding that "he is the owner of 1250 acres of land upon which his house stands but he has only possession to about 40 acres the balance being held adversely by settlers and that through this small piece of 40 acres there has been located 2 public highways... as to render his said 40 acres almost valueless..."
