Dennie's Port Folio was one of the leading literary and political magazines in the United States at the start of 19th century. Begun in 1801, the periodical was particularly critical of the administration of Thomas Jefferson, and Dennie was charged with seditious libel after publishing a particularly scathing attack on Jeffersonian democracy, ("A democracy is scarcely tolerable at any period of national history. Its omens are always sinister, and its powers are unpropitious..."), a charge of which he was acquitted. In addition, the first volume of the present set contains what are believed to be among the earliest American fashion illustrations, depicting a lady's evening dress as well as a more formal design on the second plate. Bound at the rear of Volume 4 is a 36 page pamphlet on the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, with one additional engraved plate of the tomb of George Washington. At the rear of Volume 5 is bound in a 32 page "Anniversary Oration" by Henry Latrobe for the Society of Artists of the United States. Bound between two issues in the final volume is a 41 page "Oration on Masonry" by James Milnor. Also in this final issue, mounted on the reverse of an engraved plate, is the publisher's receipt for payment from the original subscriber, G.M. Holenback. Holenback's name appears at the front of each volume.
