A revised edition, based on additional research, of a paper original completed in December 1938. Alastair Johnston in his 1985 compilation of Clapcott's papers offers: "It is apparent that his studies of the historical evolution of, what were at that time, the perceived oldest golf clubs, lead to his intense exploration of the records of the Honourable Company which formed Part I of this symposium... his conclusions, whilst they appear convincing do not enjoy unanimous support among today's golf historians."  Exceeding rare, as are all of Clapcott's writings, which until 1985, were known in only these self-produced typescripts. No copies of this appear in auction records.
