[6], 411, [1] + [10] ad pp. Frontispiece by the Kinneys. Dark blue cloth decorated in pale green, lettered in gilt. Second printing.

Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper to Frederick Irons Bamford: "Dear Fred:- And not on blessed reviewer has discovered that this book is an attack on individualism, that Martin Eden died because he was so utter an individualist that he was unaware of the needs of others, and that, therefore, when his illusions vanished there was nothing for him for which to live. With love, Jack London, Nov. 23/09." London's pen seems to have been running out of ink toward the end, and his signature is faint. With Bamford's ownership signature (somewhat blurred) at the top of the title-page. Bamford was the Oakland Public Library's Reference Librarian, and introduced London to the writings of Ruskin, Carlyle, Arnold and Morris. Like London, he had an affinity for socialism. This second printing of Martin Eden was published the same month as the first, September 1909. With bookplate on front free endpaper, "Oakland Public Library, Gift of the Oakland Forum in Memory of Annie Florence Brown."
