15 engraved maps on 14 sheets, hand-colored. Most sheets approx. 54x43 cm (20¾x17"), folding into original leather wallet-style folder, title and contents leaves mounted on the pastedowns, 15x11 cm (6x4¼").

Uncommon presentation of S.A. Mitchell's first atlas. As Warren Heckrotte comments, "This is Mitchell's first atlas and is rare. It uses the plates used in Finley's atlas of 1826, but with the additions of towns and roads. Finley also issued his atlas in the identical pocket format. Mitchell also published the atlas in a folio format and the individual maps separately in folders." Includes maps of North America, the United States (to the Rocky Mountains), regional maps of the various states, the West Indies, and South America.
