xxxii, 397, [10] pp. With 5 folding engraved plates, including "A Chart of the Gulf Stream" 20.5x25.5 cm (8x10") plus printed text at left of map. (4to) 25.5x19.5 cm (10x7¾"), original marbled boards, later cloth spine which has since deteriorated.
Important volume of these transactions, containing Benjamin Franklin's groundbreaking chart showing the Gulf Stream, at which, to the left of the same sheet, is printed his "Remarks on the Navigation from Newfoundland to New-York, in order to avoid the Gulph Stream". See the map section of this catalogue for a rare, earlier, separate publication of the chart, which shows the Gulf Stream and the east coast of North America from Florida to Newfoundland. On the map, the Gulf Stream is flowing from Florida to the mid-Atlantic. There are other articles by Franklin in the volume, including his work on chimneys, the invention of his "new stove," a brief letter on meteorological observations, remarks on the Indians of North America and other matters. There are also articles by Rittenhouse, Benjamin Rush and Bernard Romans.
