viii [i.e. ix], [1], 94, 296 pp. Folding engraved map. (8vo) 21.3x12 cm (8½x4¾"), 19th century half calf & cloth, spine tooled in gilt, raised bands, morocco lettering pieces, top edge gilt. First American Edition.

First American edition of Mackenzie's account of the first white men to cross the American continent north of Mexico, important not only for the geographic knowledge attained but also for the revealing ethnological studies of the inhabitants encountered. The folding map, "Map of America between latitudes 40 and 70 north and longitudes 45 and 180 west, exhibiting Mackenzie's rout from Montreal...". measures 26x46 cm. It has a faint discolored patch at center, a short crease tear repaired on verso.
