Vintage feathery golf ball.

The feather ball or "feathery" was difficult and expensive to make. First leather, soaked in warm water, is sewn together. It is turned inside out with a small opening left to stuff boiled feathers (a top hat full). As the ball dries, the leather shrinks and the feathers expand making it hard and tight. Shaped, treated with neatsfoot, and painted white for visibility, the ball is ready for play. The most skilled ball makers could produce three to five balls a day. The cost for one ball was about four or five shillings. Because they were delicate players could only use hickory or wood-shafted clubs, not metal. Original feather balls in great shape are exceedingly difficult to find.
