• “PREPARE FOR THE WORST AND YOU CAN AVOID IT.” June 1949. Addresses measures designed to thwart a repeat of a significant 1948 flood; the rice fields in the vicinity of Tung Ting Lake (Dongting Hu) are the most productive in China. Measures 15½x21½”. With original folds, some slight chips.
• “WORLD FAMOUS WOOL – EVEN A SPECIAL PRODUCT CAN BE WASTED.” August 1949, “Northwest Edition. Concerns the production of wool and shipment – in essence, cleaning wool prior to shipment allows better identification of quality; further, shipping costs decrease if wool is shipped after grease and dirt are removed. Both newspapers were published by the Sino-American Joint Commission on Rural Reconstruction (JCRR), whose mission was agricultural reformation in China – at that time ravaged by WWII and the civil war. The JCRR was active on mainland China until measures enacted by the nascent PRC (whose existence declared by Mao in October, 1949) forced the JCRR’s move to Taiwan. Wall newspapers were produced by government entities in China to reach readership for whom distribution of regular media was challenging. Due to their intrinsically ephemeral nature, few survived their immediate distribution, mostly because they were generally pasted on walls in village or town squares.
