Illustrated title leaf and 41 full-page hand-colored woodcut plates, printed on both sides of the leaf but for the final plate. (Folio) 33.5x20 cm (13¼x8") period cloth-backed marbled boards, pictorial label on front, titled "Bilderbuch fur Kinder". Custom cloth box.

First published in 1689, the present edition is printed from the original 17th century blocks.  There was also an 1812 printing. The blocks were cut by Elias Porzelius, mostly after designs by Maria Sandrart and the scenes depict events in the lives of men and women from birth to death, the early events including learning to walk, to read with a hornbook, and to sew. The illustrations of trades include a merchant, soldier, fencing master, tailor, shoemaker, baker, butcher, paper-maker, bookbinder, barrel maker, stone-mason, blacksmith, carpenter and tight-rope walker and other entertainers, as well as activities such as tobogganing, punting and dancing. No copies of the present edition have appeared at auction since 1991. OCLC WorldCat locates only the copy at Princeton University. Bookplate of Ch. M. Nebehay.
