Presentation and association copy inscribed by John Muir to Lucretia Perry Osborn, wife of Henry Fairfield Osborn, the noted zoologist, paleontologist, and university professor, and longtime friend of John Muir, at whose summer house "Wing-and-Wing," part of the Castle Rock property at Garrison-on-Hudson, Muir completed the writing of this book. The inscription reads in full: "To my dear friend Mrs. Henry Fairfield Osborn at whose Castle home on the Hudson, in the glad summer of 1911, this book was finished and the way cleared for South American and African wanderings. John Muir, California, July 1913." At the of the book is a two-page manuscript poem in pencil, on both sides of the free endpaper, being a tribute to "John O' the Mountains, wonderful John...", believed to likely be the work of Lucretia Osborn, though this cannot be verified. With the bookplate of Lucretia Perry Osborn. It was at Robert Underwood Johnson's urging that John Muir wrote this guide book to Yosemite, assembling and rewriting material from his previous published works in order to tell visitors all about the National Park. He even seized the opportunity to include a lengthy chapter on the Hetch Hetchy Valley, mustering support for the ongoing campaign to preserve that "Tuolomne Yosemite." BAL 14767; Kimes 308. Laid into the book are four proof sheets, printed on one side only, for "Let Everyone Help to Save the Famous Hetch-Hetchy Vallley..." with Muir's cover letter and the contribution "The Endangered Valley: The Hetch-Hetchy Valley in the Yosemite National Park." The 32-page booklet, with photographs, was published in 1909 - this seems to be the proofs of the complete text. See Kimes 287 and 288.
