While the Spanish-American War fever swept America, a group of Anarchists established a utopian “colony” at Home, Washington, on Puget Sound, west of Tacoma. When this weekly newspaper was launched in the nearby town of Lakebay by a group of Home residents, to promote their dreams of a “more complete civilization, without war, starvation and unnecessary suffering of any kind.” the colony had grown to a population of 50, living in 15 houses on 26 acres of land. A mecca and refuge for “radicals and freethinkers”, it would later attract such noted visitors as Emma Goldman and Elbert Hubbard. This early issue of the paper featured a front-page revision of the song “America”, dedicated to Chicago Anarchists executed for the 1886 Haymarket bombing (“Our comrades, tis of thee, Martyrs of liberty, Of thee we sing”), continued a serial narrative on “Lights and Shadows of Colony Life”, and reported such local gossip as the visit of a Santa Rosa man who was “about to make his home with us.” Within two years, the Home Colony would grow to nearly one hundred residents, who would be forced to collect their mail at Lakebay, because the Home post office was closed by federal authorities after Discontent published an “obscene” article advocating free love. All issues of Discontent are rare. Worldcat shows only Harvard and Stanford with holdings of the original.
