3 page AL addressed to The Honorable Board of Police Commissioners for the City of San Francisco. 1 blue piece of paper (13x8¼) written on recto and verso, then 1 white piece of paper (12½x7¾) with an embossed seal, affixed together with two small brass rings, perforated through the top edge.

The letter is supplementary material for John Marcal's application to become a Chinese language "interpreter" for the San Francisco Police Judge's Court "with all the power of a Police Officer." The letter attests that he is a voter in the city and county of SF, and that he is competent for the job (all on the first blue leaf) and the document is then signed by 12 individuals. The second leaf is from the Northern District of CA court where the Clerk testifies that J. Marcal is a citizen of the United States, as of August 11, 1856.
