Manuscript document, 12 lines on plain sheet of paper, with docketing on the verse. Pertains to a payment made by one Shadrick Barns to compensate a Howard County constable for summoning witnesses in a case. Signed by Storrs as Justice of the Peace. 7½x7¾.

Rare document signed by one of the pioneers of the Santa Fe trade. Augustus Storrs, a Missouri trader and sometime Justice of the Peace, first ventured to New Mexico in the summer of 1824, just a few years after the trade was opened following Mexico's independence from Spain. In November of 1824 he was questioned by U.S. Senator Thomas Hart Benton in Franklin, Missouri, upon the origin, present state and future prospect of trade and intercourse between Missouri and the internal provinces of Mexico. Benton presented this testimony to the U.S. Senate in January of 1825, and its publication was one of the earliest congressional documents relating the the Santa Fe trade.
