A Confederate soldier writes to his wife, telling her of health and events, and, most interesting, their search for deserted Confederate troops. The letter is dated "Campt on the road from Shrevesport to Lockinsport on the Sabine River 7 miles from Lockinisport Sept. the 1st 1864." After the normal salutations and inquiries into her and the children's health, Steubing tells of his own situation, "i was sick all the way here from Natitch with the floue and for 2 days after we came here, there is more sickness in our Regt. than i have ever seen before, there were 53 men in our compy when we left Alexanderai we have 17 in it now and 3 of them sick... Our doctors have no mediscian here all the sick have to got to the ketchya 7 miles from here to the hospital..." He goes on to say that "we were all in hopes that we would goto Texas, we were sent here to catch Deserters from Walker's Divition [sic] but we have not seen one of them we could hear of them all the way before us and behind us, but we did not come up with them, i learn that eight hundred of them have gone home...."
