19 leaves, handwritten in ink on both sides, stitched but without covers. 12½x8½, set in modern folding box.
Original log book of a voyage from Rio de Janiero to New York, from December 24, 1827, to February 20, 1828, when the ship arrived at its destination. For each day, the weather and conditions are given in detail, the various headings, etc., with occasional sightings of other ships, and comment on other aspects of the voyage. Though no whaling was engaged in, this log book was part of the collection on whaling and so is listed with those items. The name of the ship is not indicated in the body of the log, but information gained from the National Archives and Records Service indicates it was the Augusta, commanded by a Captain Suchet Mauran, with one deck, three masts, a square stern, and a woman bust head, 85 feet long, 25 feet wide, 236 tons. On the rear leaf is a 16-line manuscript poem about the sea, no author given.
Condition:
The log is a little dog-eared, with a few stains, still in quite nice condition for an original manuscript log book of the early 19th century.
