De Long (1844-1881), set out with 33 officers & men aboard the Jeannette on July 8, 1879, bound through the Bering Strait for the North Pole. On September 5, they were caught in an ice pack and drifted north for more than 21 months before being crushed by heavy ice floes. The crew abandoned ship in orderly fashion, taking to three lifeboats. One boat sank, another (in the charge of George Melville) made it to safety, the third, commanded by De Long, landed in a deserted area, the entire contingent perishing of starvation and exposure. De Long's records and journal were rescued the following spring by Melville. Arctic Bib. 3839.
