One of the most famous of all the late-Victorian magazines, a success that continued on into the modern world. The vast bulk of Doyle's work was first published in Strand, including all of the Sherlock Holmes stories with the exception of "A Study in Scarlet" (1887) and "The Sign of Four" (1890). Founded by George Newnes in 1890 and edited by H. Greenhough Smith, it was aimed at a mass market, being cheaper and more readable than the literary monthlies of the time, with effective use of illustrations and a clear, simple typeface. Vols. 2-6 contains the complete 24 stories of "Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" and "The Memories of Sherlock Holmes," which includes the 1 story that was omitted in the first printed book because it was considered too risqué during the Victorian Era. Vols. 22-23 contains the complete 9 episodes of "The Hound of Baskervilles." Vols. 26-28 contains the complete 13 short stories of "The Return of Sherlock Holmes" in the Strand, however only vols. 26 and 28 are present here.
