Cook and Amundson were both members of the Belgica party, the first expedition to spend the winter in the Antarctic, to the chagrin of many of the ill-prepared crew. First published in London in 1900, and in New York the same year by Doubleday & McClure, predecessor of the publisher of the present edition, which has the same collation; the color plates in that edition are here reproduced in monochrome.
