Collection featuring many of the leading civilian personages during the time of the American Civil War, many of them leading politicians, such as Harriet Beecher Stowe, Mary Todd Lincoln, Mrs. Jefferson Davis, Alexander H. Stephens, Caleb Cushing, Andrew Johnson, Henry Ward Beecher, Henry A. Wise, John Slidell, Gideon Welles, Simon Cameron, Hannibal Hamlin, Fernando Wood, Clement Vallandigham, Mrs. John C. [Jessie Benton] Fremont, Thurlow Weed, John Van Buren, Charles Dana, two of paintings of Jefferson Davis, and a "Blessings of Victory" montage. Mathew Brady's Civil War-era negatives fell into the hands of Anthony when he defaulted on payment for photographic supplies, and many of his most famous images were published by the Anthony firm.
