2 vols., Band 17 & 18. viii, 1020; viii, 1084 pp. Illustrated with plates from photogaphs, diagrams, etc. 8½x5½, quarter cloth & mottled boards.

Two important volumes of Annalen der Physick, containing the first appearances of several major works by Einstein, including his first two papers on special relativity. Thus we have The great physicist's epochal paper on Special Relativity, his Nobel Prize paper on the photon, his important paper on Brownian motion, and his second Relativity paper, where the equivalence of mass and energy is demonstrated, and the famous equation E=MC2 is stated in a precursory form. Max Born called Band 17 "one of the most remarkable volumes in the whole scientific literature." These copies belonged to Dr. Werner Grüninger of Luzern, with his rubberstamps on the front pastedowns along with signatures dated 1921, and handwritten listing of Einstein's contributions on the front pastedown of Band 17; he has underlined and bracketed in red the Einstein titles in the table of contents and at their appearances, and the article on the photon has additional underscoring and marginal ink comments.
