Description:

12 vols. Illus. with frontispiece portrait & 160 steel-engraved plates & maps, 157 of them hand-colored, the other 3 printed in color. (4to) 10¼x6¾, period quarter morocco & boards, spines tooled & lettered in gilt.

Buffon's famous natural history, published many times in the 18th and 19th century; this edition with many fine hand-colored engraved plates of bipeds, quadrupeds and birds.

Condition:

Some scuffing to the leather, Vol. I lacking to 1" of spine strip; foxing and some staining to the text, rarely affecting the plates, else very good.
