Typed contract, signed by Burroughs, for the publication of The Chessmen of Mars. McClurg "agrees upon its part to print and publish said manuscript in book form at its own expense and in such style and manner and in such quantity as it deems most expedient, and to sell the same at a retail or catalogue price of one dollar and ninety cents ($1.90)." Burroughs was to receive a royally of 15% on all copies of the book sold in the United States. Burroughs made sure that he retained all dramatic, motion picture and serial rights, that he would receive 50% of the amount received from the publisher of cheaper reprint editions of said book, all rights of "foreign translation into other languages than English," and 80% of the royalties on any Canadian edition. At the top of the first page is written in ink, "Cancelled and rights tr. to Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc. August 11, 1939 - 50.00." Burroughs bought back the copyright in 1939 for a bargain price of $50. A similar notation is on the agreement between McClurg and Grosset & Dunlap.
