Account by a Mormon historian of the battalion of men recuited in the Mormon camps in Iowa during the great migration west, served with some distinction and much hardship under Philip St. George Cooke, traveling to California on the southwest trail. Most of the recruits were mustered out soon after reaching San Diego in early 1847, and they made their way to Great Salt Lake, where Brigham Young had founded his great Mormon capital in July of that year.
