Complete Dickens novel in the original monthly parts. It was first issued in 88 weekly parts, each a folded sheet of sixteen pages, uncut and unopened - 12 of the pages were letterpress, the others forming the outer wrapper; every fourth or fifth week those parts were collected, combined, and issued in a green pictorial wrapper (the issue being offered here), of which 20 were produced; later still they were issued in three volumes. There were advertisements included with most of the monthly parts, though no regular "advertiser" as many of his novels in parts had. The parts in the present set have the following variances from the compositions called for by Hatton & Cleaver: Part I, lacks the ads for Rippon & Burton's General Ironmongery and Tyas's Popular Illustrated Publications. Part XI, lacks the ad for John Cumberland & Son. Part 14, both ads are present, but bound in backwards. Part XX is complete with the rare 8-pp. announcement of George Virtue. Four issues with ink name of subscriber J. Payne to the top of the front wrapper, two have his rubberstamp. Set in customn-made folding drop-front case with name of Thomas Powell Fowler stamped in gilt on front (the case has some scuffing and wear).
