Presentation copy inscribed and signed by the author on the front flyleaf, "Presented to A.J. Ricks by W.G. Brownlow." Rather pugnacious attack on Catholics, immigrants, and foreigners in general by the Tennessee newspaper editor whose strong Unionist leanings led to the closure of his press by the Confederates in 1861, his arrest as a traitor to the South (he was exiled to the North), and his eventual election by acclamation as the first post-war governor of Tennessee. After two terms as governor, he was elected U.S. senator in 1869. The signature at front is quite shaky, reflecting his affliction with palsy. The frontispiece is smaller than the rest of the book, apparently as issued; no frontispiece is mentioned by Howes B881.
