One of the great literary hoaxes of the 19th century, the 1835 publication in the New York Sun of Locke's anonymous article claiming abundant life on the moon was widely accepted as truth. Accompanied by William N. Griggs' The Celebrated "Moon Story," Its Origin and Incidents; with a Memoir of the Author..., New York: Bunnell and Price, 1852, in original cloth. Both are from the Fuller Collection at the Spokane Public Library, with perforated stamps to p.[5] or the first work, and the title of the second, a few other markings. Newspaper clippings regarding the hoax have been mounted on the front flyleaves of the first work.
