First publication of what many consider the most important philosophical work of the twentieth century, Martin Heidegger's "Being and Time," uniting the existentialism of Soren Kierkegaard and Friedrich Nietzsche and the phenomenology of Husserl. Though often gloomy and nihilistic, Heidegger's brand of exitentialism concentrated on the gap between being and non-being, that is, life and death, with the latter in some ways validating the authenticity of the former. Born in 1889 and dying in 1976, Heidegger, associated with the University of Frieburg for nearly his entire career, was a vocal supporter of the Adolf Hitler, and remained a member of the Nazi party until 1945.
