Important letter from Einstein to his first wife, Mileva, written when the great physicist was getting settled in the United States after leaving Germany in December of 1932, just before the Nazis came to power. Einstein discusses his son's precarious mental health ("...Are you even thinking about an operation of the brain or one of those forced treatments of sleep? I tell you: don't do it! I am convinced that under no circumstances should he return to an institution any more..."); his financial situation and provisions for supporting Mileva; the death of his friends Huber and Ehrenfest, the latter by suicide ("...he felt he could not hold up his profession any more. It really is a tragedy!"); and a planned trip to Paris ("I will go there despite all warnings of my friends"). Finally, he turns to his relationship to Germany and the Nazi Party then in power: "There is no news that would indicate that I have received any of the German money. On the contrary, I was burdened with another huge payment, which of course I will not make. But these guys did not make a good deal with me, as their attitude towards me has damaged them in the entire world. You have no idea, what kind of criminals they are. There will certainly be consequences. Unfortunately, this could be dangerous for Switzerland..." These revelations of his attitude towards the Nazis are quite significant, and uncommon. Because of his ethnicity, intellectualism, pacificist viewpoint and anti-Nazi stance, the party viewed him as a threat, and in 1933 he was branded a traitor, and his personal property was seized. Upon his emigration to the United States in 1933, the government asked him to refrain from publicly stating his view of the Nazis, to avoid harming U.S.-German relations. This private letter gives a rare glimpse of his feelings at this time.
