First edition in Italian of Augustine's City of God, of the most influential works of Christendom. The date and place of publication of this important work has been the subject of much discussion. Antonio di Bartolommeo printed in Venice in 1476-1478, and in Florence from 1481 onwards. The paper and typography of this work is currently accepted as that of the earlier period; an ownership inscription in one copy dates it as definitely not after 1483. B7, B8, D2 and D9 are supplied from copy, trimmed close and inlaid to size. Goff A-1248; BMC VII.1136.
