A scarce title with interesting drawings of everyday people and city scenes including the first drawing of an elder statesman raising his fist either as a political protest or in a unified solidarity. William Gropper (1897-1977), who studied under George Bellows, was part of the Ash-Can Group of social realist artists. His cartoons and drawings were published in radical journals such as the Revolutionary Age, Liberator, and the New Masses. His work also appeared in New York Tribune, The Dial, The Nation, New Yorker, and Vanity Fair. In 1927, Gropper accompanied Theodore Dreiser and Sinclair Lewis on a tour of the Soviet Union, which helped develop his keen sense of social injustice as reflected in both his paintings and influential graphics during the Great Depression.
