2 volumes. [xii], 308; vii, 306 + [6] ad pp. 7¾x4¾, later ¾ morocco & cloth, spines tooled & lettered in gilt, raised bands, top edges gilt; original cover cloth bound in at the rear of each volume. First Edition, First Issue.

First issue, with p.[x] in Vol. I (the second page of the table of contents) misnumbered xvi. The discrepancy is due to the suppression of Dickens' preface to this work, on the advice of John Forster and other friends of Dickens, who felt "it might be misunderstood in America at the time." Smith II, 3. Provenance: From the library of William Augustus Brewer.
