Burroughs' first book, and the first volume in his signature series, in which Tarzan, the son of an English nobleman, is raised in the jungle by a she-ape, falls in love with Jane Porter, and journeys to America to find her. This is the third state binding and printing, with “A.C. McClurg” set in one line in spine imprint, no acorn device, and the third state point of the printer’s imprint on the copyright page reading: "W.F. Hall Printing Company, Chicago" all set in one line of Gothic type, not in the original Old English type. Heins gives the binding with the acorn device on the spine priority, but investigations since he wrote his bibliography reveal that not to be the case. Heins TA-3; Zeuschner 696.
