Pencil drawing, signed and dated by Anthony. 10x8¾" plus margins.
Two nude women play on the sand with a beach ball, with a large head entering the picture at right, a sailboat on the water in distance. A characteristic drawing by the the New Jersey-born artist, who graduated from Yale in 1958, and spent the next two years at the San Francisco Art Institute. His numerous solo exhibitions include showings at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, San Francisco; Konstalongen Kavaletten, Uppsala, Sweden; Frank Marino Gallery, NY; Paterson Museum, Paterson, New Jersey; Stuart Katz Gallery, Laguna Beach, CA, etc. Anthony's drawings appear at first glance simple and childlike. His is a naively democratic world where the tube-like male and female characters look alike, save a few symbolic anatomical references. He has earned critical acclaim from Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol and art historian Robert Rosenblum among others. The New York Times declared "Anthony (is) something of a cult figure." (N.Y. Times, Nov. 5, 1995). His work is included in many important private and museum collections including the Guggenheim, Whitney, and Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Corcoran Museum of Art, Washington, D.C.; and the Ludwig Museum of Art, Koln, Germany. On the back of the drawing are many pencil notations, including the reference "After Lichtenstein's painting of the same title."
